HOW IT ALL BEGAN
An 80’s baby born into a musical family and growing up in rehearsals rooms, Laura watched her parents play music throughout her childhood. This reinforced her passion for performance and underlined her dream to become a singer. Laura is often regarded as the ‘little lady with the big voice’, also described as ‘Miss honey-over-sand-paper’ due to her full-bodied raspy tone and raw edge. Often likened to mainstream artists such as Amy Winehouse, Adele and Duffy by the press, Laura is at her core, a Jazz/Soul artist, who loves to dabble in many different styles of music.
Her long standing relationship with dance music has been an excellent springboard for writing in various genres, enabling Laura to exercise all of her influences. These range from Aretha Franklin, Ella Fitzgerald and Stevie Wonder to Chaka Khan, Michael Jackson, Kelis and Janelle Monae. Laura has been working in the music industry professionally and releasing her records for over a decade and she writes, records and performs her own material all over the globe from England and Europe, Asia and South America.
Artists that Laura has worked with: Gnarls Barkley, The Streets, Mike Skinner, Mj Cole, Robbie Rivera, Cagedbaby, Dave Spoon, Lewis Taylor, Part Time Heroes, Soul Snatchers, Hint, Diesler, Kidda, Henry Storch, Delmontis, The Prototypes, Lee Baker, Licks and Brains, Icicle and many more. Laura has an excellent showreel up on her Soundcloud page where you can get a real feel for the diversity in her work.
“Laura is one of the most exciting vocalists and writers that I have had the pleasure to work with in the past few years. This girl has funk and soul oozing from every part of her. Her musicality is second to none. She can cut it both live and in the studio. Phenomenal”
– MJ Cole
Laura and The Streets
For the album ‘The Hardest Way To Make an Easy Living’ in 2006, Laura went in the studio and recorded backing vocals for The Streets for the first time. After touring across the UK and Europe with the band in 2007/8, she continued to appear on every album that followed. Eventually Laura co-wrote and recorded their second single ‘OMG’ from their final album ‘Computers and Blues’ in Spring 2011. Mike Skinner and Laura continued to collaborate and went on to release ‘We Are Go’ which featured in the most popular UK film release of 2011, The Inbetweeners. In December 2014 Mike and Laura went back into the studio to write and record ‘Night Fights’ featured on The Bat Phone single release, with plays from BBC’s vibey 1Xtra station.
“Laura Vane is as potent a songwriter and singer as I’ve come across. Not only does she have the ideas but she communicates them in a high pressure environment with a smile.”
– Mike Skinner
